Attractions on Oahu - A Short List

Oahu has lots of country as well as the very populated areas like Honolulu and Waikiki. The windward, leeward, north shores, and Heavenly Valley have very low population densities and feel more like Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. There are beautiful shore lines, vistas and swimming beaches all around the island. Oahu offers many other attractions including:

1. The Polynesian Cultural Center providing an experience of being on many of the island groups in the Pacific. It offers a day's worth of adventures. The Center also has an I-Max theater on the site. Admission to the center includes free access to numerous I-Max movies playing daily.

2. Another popular attraction on the Windward or East side of the island is Sea Life Park offering performing marine mammals.

3. Performing dolphins can also be seen at the Kahala Hotel in Kahala, just minutes from our place.

4. Another attraction is the Iolani Palace built in the late 1800's by King Kalakaua. The King was impressed by the kings and queens of Europe and wanted to imitate their life style in Hawaii.

5. Right across the street from the palace is a beautiful statue of King Kamehameha, the warrior who united all the islands in the late 1700's.

6. The Bishop Museum is just a short drive and has many artifacts from the former independent nation of Hawaii as well as modern exhibits and a planetarium.

7. Pearl Harbor has a museum, movie of the WW II bombing and a tour of the harbor.

Restaurants

Oahu has the finest restaurants on any island in the Pacific. Most of them are within minutes from our retreat:

12th Avenue Grill - Fine Italian cuisine. One of the best restaurants in town

Restaurants 10 - 20 minutes from the retreat

The Kahala Hotel - from fine dining to dining on the beach. Good food with great views of the ocean and outer islands.

Other excellent Thai Restaurants: Champa Thai, Saiam Palace view minutes from the apartment.

Irifune on Kapahulu Avenue - Japanese Dining with a local twist. It is famous for their spicy garlic ahi.

Nick's Fish Market - The choice of the crew of the former Magnum PI. Pricey fine dining in Waikiki. The waiters and bus boys move very fast.

Michelle's - Great French fine dining at the beach near San Souci. Expensive. Great Sunset and ocean views.

Roy's Restaurant in Hawaii Kai - Some of the best Asian Pacific cuisine in Hawaii. Great ocean and mountain views. Great sunsets.

Aloha Tower Market place. Many restaurants, evening entertainment, on the harbor in downtown Honolulu.

Shopping on Oahu

Oahu has numerous shopping centers and opportunities to buy local goods, gifts from the far east and from around the world.

1. One of the most colorful and distinctly different experience is the International Market Place in Waikiki. Numerous small venders offer a wide spectrum of goods. Here you can bargain, as you would in a foreign country.

2. The Ala Moana Shopping Center is one of the largest shopping malls in the world. It offers up-scale merchandise as well as the normal fare. Open walks with beautiful vegetation provides a great place to buy presents, to eat at one of the fine restaurants, and to sit and watch the tourists and locals go by.

3. Kahala Shopping Mall is a lovely low-keyed shopping center near our retreat. It has numerous stores, restaurants and an 8-plex theater complex.

4. The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki has a mix of merchandise with a full range of prices.

5. Aloha Tower Market Place offers a varied mix of merchandise. The shops offer locally produced items that range from inexpensive to higher end merchandise.

These are just a few of our favorite attractions on Oahu. Please consult your tourist magazines for more ideas on how to spend you time.
